Prototyping: CAD – CAM / CNC Machining

     Computer numerical control - machining of word, metal or plastic parts from a block of material generated from 2D drawings or a 3D CAD data translated to CNC file by the CNC machine programmer and operator. The CNC machine-tool capabilities are defined by the CNC program (Master CAM) programming and always have a solid background in manual, machine operation and a working knowledge of machining parts (chip removal rates) from the selected materials. Complex 3-D parts are only limited by the 3DCAD geometry, material stock size and the capabilities of clamping, holding or jigging the material securely in place and allow the tool cutter access, given 3 - 4 and 5 axis, multi-tool machining centers.  Deep, internal, small opening cavities are limited beyond 3”-12” inches and totally enclosed hollow parts are not possible. The costs of initial part design and CAD development for mach inability and manufacturability including the planning and programming the CNC machine is typically offset by the more parts that are generated.  The first part costs the most.  CNC machine offers excellent consistency and quality control. Varying surface finish qualities are also available from rough texture (with machine tooling marks to polished finish). The automotive and aircraft industries are almost completely CAD-CAE-CAM / CNC manufacturing operations and it migration to CNC robotics. (See CAD-CAE-CAM)
