ID Introduction (Page 3)

Most people think of the term "Industrial Design" (ID) as the design of industrial factories, possibly the design of all the machines that do the manufacturing of the millions of products we see on store shelves, but that is only one area of the vast array of Industrial Design functions.  Industrial Designers are typically involved in mass production design of products on a large scale, however we "zoom in" and focus on specific product design and detail.   From ice scrapers to cell phones, kitchen appliances to life giving medical products, Industrial Design is the catalyst that drives user-awarded design and commercial profitability.

Through field and focus market research, the product concept "idea" is developed to position the design within a definable market niche.   The Strategic Development Processs helps the designers define specifications and create virtual models of the product which can be tested, analyzed, synthesized, reviewed and confirmed prior to those costly prototypes and molds.  Through the use of three dimensional/computer-aided design stations and predictive analysis tools, the Industrial and Engineering Designers develop rapid responses to market demands.

The Industrial Designer is trained to view the data through a variety of disciplines including physiological, psychological, and sociological, while maintaining a concern for the technical, technological and manufacturing limitations and economies of mass production.   WhiteLight Design specializes in and places emphasis on "Human Factors", ergonomics and User Interface design.   The design methodology or development process is to approach the art of developing products as a science which uses the market and the user relationship to help define the shape, color and function.  The most obvious benefit is seen in the optimization of function, appearance and commercial value of a product and/or system for the mutual benefit of user, the manufacturer, and the company producing the product for a profit.

ID is a comparatively small portion of the overall product development budget.  Industrial Designers will typically work concurrently with Engineering, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Designers, Manufacturers and Materials Suppliers to create a total product system which is both marketable and manufacturable at a low cost.  Whether you are a Corporate Executive, Product Development Manager, Venture Capitalist or a start-up Entrepreneur,  Industrial Design is your best tool for creating total business success.  Once your product is designed, and CAD modeled you can then be plugged into our Manufacturer-Molder Network (MMN) to assist you in the manufacturing process.   Services include sourcing, quoting, selecting and delivering the necessary drawings and CAD part files of your design to create your tooling, component sub-assemblies, sourcing, assembly and quality control program. A typical industrial design service agreement delivers the 3D CAD files with a working and or appearance model including appropriate functional mock-ups and/or final appearance (marketing) models.
