CAD Programs - 3D Virtual Modeling

     WhiteLight Design uses a variety of CAD software programs from advanced 2D digital graphics to comprehensive dedicated three dimensional (3D) CAD-CAE-CAM software to complete its product development system.  To start with all CAD software programs must be run on high end heavy computation computer hardware systems.  WD has invested in IBM and DELL as our primary computer hardware supplier, running the latest Intel® Xeon and Quad Core Xeon Processors and Graphic Accelerators.   Two primary virtual 3D solid modeling programs used are parabolic based solid modeling ProEngineer (www.ptc.com) and SolidWorks (www.solidworks.com).  WD uses other graphic NURBS based programs such as formZ and Rhino for ideation, conceptualization and 3D visualization, and color renderings.  The 3D programs are complemented by the Adobe family of digital design programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, etc. for photographic quality, high resolution, color renderings and motion videos. All CAD programs can be file formatted into web friendly extensions (.jpg, .tif). for concurrent progress updates and Emailing   All programs used by WD are tested and proven standards in the CAD industry.
 

ProEngineer® or ProE Wildfire release 3.0
(3D/CAD –CAE modeling program)

     Pro/ENGINEER (referred to as ProE) by Parametric Technology Corporation Needham, MA (www.ptc.com), is a globally accepted standard in the CAD industry.  It is 3D parametric feature solid modeling software with outputs consisting of solid volume model data.  Parametric – parameters refer to the model construction constraints or conditions (XYZ referenced to a axis plane) whose values determine the size, shape, characteristics, and behavior of the model or assembly.  Parameters can be either numeric, for example dimension values such as the diameter of a circle or the length of a line; or geometric, such as conditions like tangent, concentric, coincident, parallel, horizontal, and the like.  Numeric parameters such as dimensions can easily be related to each other through mathematical equations to create complex design intent.  A product and its entire bill of materials can be modeled accurately with fully associative engineering drawings, and revision control information. All data is interchangeable between these platforms without conversion.  Attributes of parametric modeling features give relationships between numeric parameters in the entire model to make changing numeric values or construction parameters edible easier.
 

     The CAD model data may also be complimented by predictive analysis, virtual simulation CAE software like FEA (Finite Element Analysis) -  Rapid Prototyping and CAM - CNC machining and manufacturing.  Pro/E software includes build modules like: Pro/Surface and Pro/Sheetmetal, ProAssembly, Pro/Cabling and Pro/Harness/Mfg, Pro/E Complete Mold Design ( Core, cavity & mold base design) Pro/E  Progressive Die, Pro/E Toolmaker, Pro/E NC Sheet metal, Pro/E Plastic Advisor, Pro/E Prismatic and Multi-surface Milling  and Pro/E Production Machining

SolidWorks® (3D/CAD –CAE modeling)

     SolidWorks is another standard in the CAD industry. available from a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, S. A. (Suresnes, France). (www.solidworks.com)  It  is also a slightly less powerful 3D solid modeler, using the parasolid geometric modeling kernel.  SolidWorks employs a similar parametric, feature-based approach to creating models and assemblies.   It comes with several modules including COSMOS Works® an CAE - FEA design validation and optimization software including motion simulation, drop test, design optimization, thermal heat transfer, thermal stress, vibration, buckling, and fatigue analysis. COSMOS Motion™ a complete motion simulation and kinematics package TolAnalyst™ enables tolerance analysis  to ensure that their designs will fit and function properly.  

formZ® (3D Photorealistic Color Renderings)

     Form-Z is a general purpose 3D modeling application, published by auto-des-sys. It features advanced surface and solid modeling capabilities, including support for NURBS, metaballs, and subdivision surfaces.  It includes a basic preview renderer, but supports many external renderers. form-Z  RenderZone is a version of form-Z that includes flat, ground shading, phong shading, z-buffering, and raytracing rendering methods. A version is also available with photorealistic rendering, called RadioZity, Flamingo® (a raytracing rendering plugin), Penguin® (non-photorealistic rendering), and Bongo® (animation).

Rhino or Rhinoceros®   (3D Photorealistic Color Renderings)

     Rhinoceros® or Rhino 3D is NURBS-based modeling tool, by Robert McNeel & Associates.  Commonly used for Industrial Design, Architecture, marine design, Jewelry design, automotive design, multimedia and graphic design industries.  Rhino3D specializes in free-form NURBS complex surface modeling.  Rhino 3D is and relatively low cost including generous import and export options.  Can create  shaded, working views, perspective working views, coordinate read-out, named views, floating/dockable command area, pop-up recently-used commands, clickable command options, auto-complete command line, customizable pop-up commands, pop-up layer manager, synchronize views, camera-based view manipulation, perspective match image, configurable middle mouse button, customizable icons and user workspace, customizable pop-up toolbar, transparent toolbars, context sensitive right-click menu, dockable dialogs, multiple monitor support, Alt key copy and OpenGL support with anti-aliasing.

®: Photoshop®, Illustrator®, InDesign®, Acrobat®

     The Adobe family of graphic software tools are a staple of the profession for graphic applications. 3D CAD programs model images and drawings can be imported into these programs to create digital presentations, business plans and graphic communication art.   Today's competitive market require Industrial Designers, Engineers and Manufacturers to continually reduce costs and increase the pace of development and innovation.
