The WhiteLight Design, Strategic Development Process (SDP) is your path to your Enlightened Solution. The SDP is a methodology, a proven commercial business approach to new product development, industrial design, product engineering, CAD & prototype design. It is a combination of business planning, and conceptual thinking & drawing, marketing analysis, industrial design 3D CAD, cutting edge engineering, materials and predictive analysis, combined into a phased plan of attack. It is a proven business strategy which insures the project manager that he or she has the appropriate information, critical product development path and data delivered at timely and justifiable milestones. The strategic development process assists the project management team in making informed, experience based, data driven decisions. The Strategic Development Process Corporate Managers and Entrepreneurs must weigh the high costs of committing personnel and resources to developing a new business venture such as a new product. To justify the significant time and resources a project manger must select and direct a particular primary product design or development path and be assured that they are on the cutting edge of design technologies and market needs. The SDP assists in compressing the development cycle. It facilitates communication and concurrent development of the marketing, manufacturing and industrial design processes. It is a tool for improving the user/product interface combined with the power of computer 3D modeling and rapid prototyping technologies. Today's instant feedback market demands a strategic plan and efficient execution. This focused approach insures that the final product is producible and meets the needs of the user and the market. The process is broken down into 9 primary phases of development, review and approval milestones. Although your project may not require all of the outlined phases and tasks, they should all be given due consideration. WD recommends the following general SDP master plan to plan and develop any new product program. The phased master plan assists the project manager in:
Although not all business ventures or products development programs require all of the outlined phases, it is given as an example of a typical "product development program" which may require multiple assembled components. Some projects only require 3 - 4 phases. In general, the phases are business decision milestones. A major working portion of the process is generated in Phases 1 - 3 which are dedicated to determining the basic concept and overall business/production feasibility of the proposed design solution. Phases 1 - 3 can be structured into a formal study or Feasibility Analysis. Although the formal study is not always necessary, in this case, it is shown as part of the design process. The study helps decision makers in justifying the continued development costs. The formal Feasibility Study, if determined appropriate assists in defining critical paths that are derived from one or more production design approaches or development actions that need to be implemented. Each phase or milestone of the project is concluded with a meeting and or video/phone conference with the decision team to confirm development progress and approve that phase of work. In a formal services agreement associated deliverables, costs and timelines are broken out for decision-maker purposes. For the purpose of this strategic development master plan the breakdown, costs and time schedules will be determined at later date. The Strategic Development Process
