M +DI Moisture + Density Indicator
Non-Nuclear Gauge for Compaction Quality Control in Earthworks
.
This totally new product is a non-nuclear gauge for determining in-situ
(water) moisture content and density in the same soil, by
the TDR (Time
Domain Reflectometry)
method
to meet (ASTM D6780-02*) standard test method for
earthworks quality control.
The development program resulted in
a case enclosure featuring a battery powered CPU, an easy
access handle and quick disconnect shelf for storage of the stainless steel disk gage,
including the metal pin alignment bracket, 4-10" ground pins &
metal scrapper
storage.
Product
development issues included
accessory tool and
data management,
extreme use, impact and water
resistance, electronic cable routing and interfacing
connections. Driving development
forces included low production volumes,
material costs, size, weight/balance and portability which lead to a low cost thermo-forming production part-tooling
program. The project included several generations of 3D-CAD/CAM prototyping to quality control
the tooling, material gage, trim and fit tolerances.
The solution was geometrically
solid industrial design resulting in a sturdy,
construction grade
enclosure incorporating
ground breaking
geoscience.
